Hundreds Agree to Hold the Line for Retirement Security

IE_unity_crowd_500x296.jpgMatthews and LIUNA Business Manager Stephen Switzer led a panel with an overview of the current retirement system for both Riverside County and Riverside City employees, the health of CalPERS, and the changes some politicians would like to make.
Many of the questions centered around the buzz created by many cities changing to a two-tiered system, which would bring new hires into a position under a different and lesser retirement benefit structure.

“Who do you think will be the target in a two-tiered system?” asked Maria Ochoa-Flynn, a victim service advocate and SEIU Regional Board member. “Us!” many shouted back. “That’s right!” Ochoa-Flynn said. “We want to hold the line! Are you with me?” “Yes!” the crowd shouted back clapping.

“This is about all of us standing together” said Matthews. “You have the right to retire in your community you have served with dignity!”

Take Action:
At the conclusion of the meeting members, were encouraged to fill out postcards to send to the Board of Supervisors and the Riverside City Council reminding them that members are constituents, public service workers, union members, and voters. These cards will be delivered to the respective elected officials.
