Schoonover’s career as a labor leader started 31 years ago when he walked into his first union meeting worried about the ability to support a new family and a new home.
“When I walked out – I left a leader,” he said.
Since then, Schoonover, a Heavy Duty Equipment Mechanic for the City of Los Angeles, has served as a steward, a trustee, vice-president and president of Local 347, the first vice-president of Local 721 and the first elected president of Local 721.
“More than ever, workers are falling behind and our middle class is falling apart. We all have a responsibility to level the playing field for everyone.”
SEIU 721 Vice President Linda Dent added, “Bob Schoonover is a unifying voice able to bring people and ideas together at a time when we’re facing monumental challenges. This is an exciting moment for workers everywhere.”
