SEIU and its Coalition partners are speaking out against Mayor Villaraigosa’s plan to close the City 26 days a year, a massive service cut. Yesterday the mayor quietly signed a budget, and the City Council approved a mandatory furlough implementation plan. With few exceptions for public safety and water treatment, the City will shut down on the second and fourth Friday of each month starting July 10.

SEIU has proposed a recovery plan centered on cost savings and early retirements. Elected officials have pledged to keep services running during the recession. To hold them accountable, SEIU and the Coalition of LA City Unions have opposed furloughs as an illegal unilateral change to working conditions, as well as destructive service cuts.
