Hundreds of City Professionals Demand a Return to Contract Talks

The Committee is yet to formally respond to the bargaining team’s contract proposal.

On March 2, the Mayor issued a press conference urging drastic reforms to civilian and public safety retirement systems that include increased retirement ages and increased contribution rates. City workers are in negotiations on the issue of retirement reform and urge the Mayor to support the collective bargaining rights of City workers by collaborating instead of unilaterally announcing proposals to the current system.

“The Mayor’s unilateral actions and refusal to respond to our proposal is a blatant attempt to circumvent our right to collective bargaining. This is not Wisconsin,” said Terry Keating of MOU 8.

Last month, City professionals presented a contract proposal that would generate $5 million annually in savings by ending contractor inefficiencies, ending furloughs, increasing medical benefit co-payments and expanding retirement contributions for employees.

The Next Move is Mediation
Earlier this week, the Employee Relations Board convened and authorized a Declaration of Impasse on the bargaining between the City and MOU 8 and 17. The Board will order both parties to mediation. A state mediator will attempt to resolve outstanding issues.

If mediation fails, either party can request a fact finding process. None of these processes are binding. On the issue of the unfair labor practice filed by MOU 8 and 17 concerning bad faith bargaining, the Board has held the unfair claim in hopes the impasse process will resolve the issue.

Pressure the EERC
The MOU 8 and 17 Bargaining Team and members demand the Mayor honor the collective bargaining rights of 1,700 city professionals and urge the EERC to resume negotiations.

Support Bargaining Efforts
The bargaining team needs a mass numbers of members to contact the Executive Employee Relations Committee.
