At bargaining on Tuesday, Riverside county management began discussion of their “pension reform” proposal and again indicated their intent to have a second tier of retirement benefits for new employees and have all employees pay their entire 8% EPMC (Employer Paid Member Contribution) by the end of the new contract cycle.
The SEIU 721 bargaining team remains committed to coming to an agreement that will ensure fairness for all of our members.

How can the County reign on a promise that they made us when we were hired?!! I stayed with the County for over 20 years now, receiving lower pay than the private sector and surrounding cities. All because our retirement plan made it worth it to me. Good employees will be jumping ship in droves if we are forced to basically take ANOTHER pay cut by having to pay the portion of our retirement that the County promised to pay us when we were hired. It just won’t be worth it to work here any more. Having no pay increases in years, being furloughed, the price of everything going up and now this. Nice to know our value to the Board of Supervisors. I would like to see their pension plan published.
IF SEIU members have to pay retirement benefits before LIUNA does, this means we will have contributed to our retirement for 1 year longer than LIUNA members; how fair is this? ALSO, SEIU has not negotiated raises for it’s members since 2009 (except those who were topped out, making them get far more than those of us who still have many steps to go before we are topped out) AND LIUNA got raises up until May 2010. When are SEIU members going to be treated equally with LIUNA members? How fair is it to make us pay 8% in retirement benefits and live without raises for over 3 years? ALSO, SEIU members had to take a 9 hour furlough per pay period for 1 year and LIUNA gets to do their furloughs over a 2 year period. How fair is this? All of us in SEIU are still trying to recover from ‘furlough’ time. SEIU needs to make better negotiations with the county for its members. ALS
With management having made promises to us when we were hired about our retirement is all good and fine. When I worked for the federal government they changed their retirement plan. At that time current workers had the choice to either stay in the old retirement system or move to the new one. New employees did not have a choice. Management cannot just “change” our retirment plan on us without keeping their promise to those employees who are already vested and those of us who are almost vested. They can change the rules for any employees hired after they reach a new bargaining agreement, but to change it for those of us who have put in our time it should not happen. If SEIU allows this to happen I will probably have to start thinking about finding employment under a system that will not just up and change itself.
Is anyone still around from when the county changed from paying all 8% of retirement upon hiring to having to pay 8% for the first 5 years of employment. If there is someone reading this blog can you answer how that change went into effect?
When are we going to get a raise? I have done everything i have been ask to do, but still no raise in site. This is just not fair. Please lets go to work on getting our union members the raises they deserve and need.
